Hello, I'm Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends' PC problems.
Which Windows 10 build are you running - 1903, 1909, 2004 or 20H2 (Oct 2020)?

If this message is via Edge or another browser then yes it is suspicious, you should backup your favourites then close Edge/browser, either by clicking on the X, by ctrl, alt del & then open task manager & find Edge/other browser entry & click on this & choose end task. As you cannot do this I would just try clearing the browser's cookies, cache & history.
If this isn't enough you can reset Edge by Right-click on the Start button in the lower-left corner and select "Apps and Features".
Scroll through the list until you find "Microsoft Edge", click it, and then click on the "Advanced options" link.
Next, click on the "Reset" button.
For other browsers then they also may have a reset feature, if not then you can uninstall & reinstall the browser.

If this doesn't fix the problem:
It will be wise to register with a malware removal site to receive dedicated malware removal instructions, an expert will remain with you throughout the process until confirmation that your PC is 100% clean.

Virginia, thank you for your reply. I will try your instructions, but first I have some more info that may help identify the specific cause of my problem.

First of all, I turned off all Microsoft Edge notifications. This seems to have completely stopped the pop-ups (fingers crossed!). So apparently the adware virus had hijacked Edge's notifications feature. (Of course, this now means I won't get any notifications, including ones I might have wanted.)

Secondly, I used the the Browser Task Manager in Edge to see what processes were running there. I discovered two javascript processes that periodically run every couple of minutes, then stop, then run again, over and over. I am pretty sure these are related to the problem. In the Browser Task Manager they are shown like this:

Service Worker: https://news-central.me/sw.js

Service Worker: https://www1.news-back.org/sw.js

I assume the javascripts are located at those URLs, and not on my computer, which means there's something else on my computer (or attached to Edge) that calls them. I'm not technical enough to figure out what that would be or how to find and destroy it.

Now I'm going to try again to close Edge and if I can't I'll try the reset procedure you advised. Meanwhile as noted, I've stopped the pop-ups but I'm sure there's still something nasty on my computer I need to get rid of.

Additional: In my Edge settings, I added those Service Worker URLs to my "block" list for sites running javascript. Those Service Workers are no longer appearing in my Browser Task Manager, so I guess I've prevented them from running.

I still don't know if there's something else still on my computer (or attached to Edge) that I should get rid of. But I think I can live with it now that 1) pop-ups are no longer occurring and 2) web pages that I don't want to see are no longer being automatically opened.

Also, I was able to close Edge by normal means. I didn't have to go through that reset process.

BTW, I did a quick read-up on Service Workers. They are something new(?) in Edge that allows site developers to push notifications to users even when users are offline(?). I didn't fully understand it, but based on my experience, has someone figure out how to use them to deliver adware-type pop-ups to us? If so, Microsoft's developers might want to investigate.

Thanks again,

Steve

I would report this to Microsoft via the Feedback app - Windows key + F key.

Edge can now run in the background due to a new feature, you may wish to turn this off.
Open Edge>Settings & more>Settings>System>Turn off 'continue running background apps when Edge is closed' this will ensure extensions & Edge services will be closed/stopped when Edge is closed.

If you feel you're still infected then visiting one of the removal forums I mentioned will put your mind at rest.

Hello,

My name is Ben and I'm a Community Manager for Microsoft Edge. I saw this discussion and wanted to see if I could lend some insight.

If you are seeing pop-ups from sites, even when you aren't online, this may be a permission that was granted to the browser by a user. If that's the case, I would suggest going to edge://settings/content/all , reviewing which sites have permissions, and resetting or removing those that have become unwanted.

If this doesn't speak to the issue, please let me know. Thank you, and have a great day!

-Ben

I had similar problem from "bonalluterser.com" that started to send fake pop up "viruses found" in the low right corner on my Edge browser today sept 28.

It started after I googled info about an old swedish book, pushed the book link, and then upon request I pushed the button "confirm that you are no robot". Nothing happened, instead soon after the fake "viruses found" poped up every 15-20 min (marked McAfee, but I use Bitdefender). After help here and some trial and error i managed to take away "bonalluterser.com" via edge://settings/content/notifications,

Thanks a lot for valuable help!

I just posted about the same thing but so far it has not affected my use of Edge. The notifications make no sense at all and most of them seem to be more like a promotion of buying protection from Norton and sometimes McAfee. They just don't go anywhere but they are constant.

The internet can be unsafe sometimes.

I recommend Malwarebytes Browser Guard from Chrome's extension store, it's free and it makes browsing safe by blocking all malwares and adwares etc.,
